Diastasis Rectus Abdominis (DRA)

Diastasis Rectus Abdominis (DRA) occurs when the linea alba (the connective tissue running between the left and right rectus abdominis muscles) becomes stretched and lengthened. DRA is most often associated with pregnancy, but it can also occur in individuals of any gender as well as pediatric populations. Several factors may contribute to the development of clinically significant DRA including prolonged abdominal stretching as seen in pregnancy, significant weight fluctuations, chronic repetitive abdominal straining or distention, and genetic predisposition. This can cause the midline of the abdominal wall to bulge or dome outward during certain movements (like sit ups or leg lifts).

Our physiotherapists are trained to assess your abdominal wall and midline connective tissue (linea alba) function to help you safely rebuild core strength and function. Part of this training includes guidance on managing intra-abdominal pressure during everyday movements and exercise.
